(2017 Remaster) Although The Ramones never achieved mainstream financial success, they released 21 live and studio albums, had a devoted fan base and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. By cutting music down to its bare essentials – four chords a simple, catchy melody a sped up tempo and irresistibly inane lyrics, the Ramones blazed the trail for thousands of bands that followed, influencing everyone from The Clash and The Sex Pistols to Green Day and The Offspring. Ignited the punk-rock movement with their eponymous 1976 debut album, revitalizing rock and roll at one of its lowest ebbs with attitude, energy and a loud, fast new sound. #Ramones rocket to russia plus

Both albums have stabs at love songs, and I'd argue "I Wanna be Your Boyfriend" trumps "Ramona". And aren't those the two qualities you seek out the Ramones for? RtR is still catchy as hell- but not in a way that's as immediate or visceral. And there's a reason why their cover of "Let's Dance" was played in their live shows much more often than "Do You Wanna Dance". "Blitzkrieg Bop" will stay in your head for days all the violent tracks I've listed come softened with a juicy chorus and of course there's "Judy is a Punk". Second big point: I SWEAR that Ramones has catchier hooks. That messed up humour isn't nearly as prevalent on RtR- perhaps that's why some critics prefer it: it's definitely the sweeter album. I guess it's that Joey sounds so completely harmless that having him narrate gore is inherently comic. The violence on "Beat on the Brat", "I Don't Wanna Go Down to the Basement", "Loudmouth" and "Chain Saw" always gets me. Not one of them, however, has managed to make a good joke out of Nazism: Ramones manages it twice. The first big point in Ramones favour is that it's funnier: it has this twisted goofiness to its atmosphere that a million bands have tried to replicate. Ramones' superiority still seemed unquestionable. That it was their best I always assumed was a given.īut I'm always up for questioning my opinions, so I played both, one after the other. well, it's one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

Every one of those first four Ramones albums is a stone-cold classic, and they made plenty of great material afterwards. I googled " Rocket to Russia vs Ramones" and was presented with this poll that favoured the former this BBC review stated that Rocket to Russia was "perhaps their most critically acclaimed".ĭon't get me wrong: I love, LOVE Rocket to Russia. I then recalled, however, that Stephen Thomas Erlewine (another critic whose opinions I respect) wrote that he felt that Rocket to Russia was the group's strongest outing, too. But my eyes popped when I saw he'd selected Rocket to Russia over Ramones. I'm a huge fan of his writing, so most of his choices didn't surprise me: New York Dolls, It Takes a Nation of Millions, Kala, etc. Robert Christgau recently posted his top 50 albums of all time.
